Phil Kennemore, bassist for the hard rock band Y&T, died yesterday after his battle with lung cancer. He was 57 years old. Kennemore was one of the founding members of Y&T along with guitarist/singer Dave Meniketti, guitarist Joey Alves, and drummer Leonard Haze. The band formed in 1972 originally under the name Yesterday and Today, taking their name from American release by the Beatles of the same name. In 1980, the band shortened their name to Y&T. The band were sort of popular around the California area. They found their most sucess in the 1980's with songs such as "Lipstick and Leather" and "Summertime Girls". The band broke up in 1991 but reunited in 1995 sporadically until reuniting for good in 2001. Kennemore and singer Dave Meniketti were the only original members to not leave the band. In 2010, the band released a new studio album called Facemelter.
It's sad to hear of Phil's passing. I had read about Phil's illness. In all honesty, I'm not in anyway a fan of Y&T but I first heard of them around 2002 or 2003 when I saw both the videos for "Lipstick and Leather" and "Summertime Girls" on VH1 Classic and thought they were a good band. My thoughts and prayers go out to Phil's family and all of his friends, including the guys in Y&T. I'm going to have to get an album of theirs now...in Phil's memory.
Rest in peace, Phil.
